Award-winning bartender Lee Potter Cavanagh joins SouthTrade International as Australian Craft Spirits Ambassador

Lee Potter Cavanagh

SouthTrade International welcomes award-winning bartender, Lee Potter Cavanagh, to their growing team of Australian Craft Spirits Ambassadors. Potter Cavanagh will join Paul Slater (SouthTrade’s Local Craft Ambassador VIC/TAS) in overseeing trade advocacy for Adelaide Hills Distillery and Starward Whisky in the NSW/ACT territory.

Recognising the importance of supporting and driving Australia’s Premium Spirit category, SouthTrade’s National On-Premise Manager, Andy Wren, says, “The role is crucial in supporting a category that we have seen triple in the last three years. With huge consumer demand for locally crafted spirits, it is imperative for us as a business to help arm the trade with the best New World Spirits and experienced Liquid Specialists. We are very proud of our Australian Craft Spirits portfolio and are delighted to see someone of Lee’s calibre join our already strong team”.

Potter Cavanagh is a highly respected, well-decorated bartender and bar owner with a wealth of experience in the On-Premise. With awards ranging from Australian Bartender Magazine Bartender of the Year – 2nd in 2019, 1st in 2015 and 3rd in 2011 – Potter Cavanagh has also been a judge for the Australian Distilled Spirits Awards from 2016 to 2019.

Managing influential cocktail bar, The Victoria Room, which was recognised as Best Drinks Selection 2011 and Best Marketed Venue 2010 by Australian Bartender Magazine as well as Best Cocktail Bar 2011 by Timeout Magazine Sydney, Potter Cavanagh rounded off his experience in London where he worked for the critically acclaimed HIX Restaurant Group. Here, Potter Cavanagh was responsible for the beverage lists at HIX Soho, one of the Top 10 Restaurant Bars in the world, working creatively with chefs and his bar teams to create locally inspired lists.

Potter Cavanagh returned to Australia in 2014 where he was employed as a creative consultant for AKIBA, winning awards such as Best Cocktail Bar in the ACT 2015, 2nd in NSW/ACT People’s Choice  Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide and 1st in the ACT People’s Choice ACT Tourism Awards.

With native ingredients at the heart of Potter Cavanagh’s practices, he is no stranger to Australian Craft Spirits and the brilliance behind them, championing them on the cocktail list of his Bondi Beach bar, Rosenbaum & Fuller.

Potter Cavanagh says, “Already celebrating Australian Spirits at my bar, Rosenbaum & Fuller, the opportunity to represent and celebrate these local brands was an opportunity I had to leap at. Adelaide Hills and Starward are two of the best distilleries in the country with both innovating and leading their category in their own ways, I relish the opportunity to spread the word and encourage people to drink local”.

SouthTrade International’s Australian Craft Spirit portfolio homes four of the category’s key players – Adelaide Hills Distillery, Starward Whisky, Mr Black Coffee Liqueur and Cape Grim 666 Vodka. Between them these brands represent over a third of the Local Craft Spirits category.
