FDM Profiles: Jacob Cohen

Jacob Cohen: Mr. Southern Comfort

After winning the Southern Comfort Traveling Tales competition in 2017, we knew this would not be the last we heard of Jacob Cohen. Fortunately for us, Jacob joined the the FDM Training Team in QLD! After a quick visit to FDM HQ, Jacob answered a few burning questions for us!

FDM: What is your most memorable shift at a bar?

Jacob: There have been so many amazing ones! But, I think the most memorable would have to the 1st birthday party we had at the bar I was managing in Cairns called Three Wolves! It was just perfect, amazing atmosphere, brilliant guests and one hell of a party!

FDM:If you could eliminate one cocktail from bar menus everywhere, what would it be and why?

Jacob: To be perfectly honest, I don’t think there is one. I think there a some drinks that are worse then others, but it comes down to the bartender to be able to make a tasty drink even with a less than quality base. I think every drink has their place.

FDM: You’re stuck on an island for the rest of your life, and can only choose one cocktail to drink for eternity, what is it and why?

Jacob: Aperol Spritz! Bright, refreshing, delicious.

FDM: What’s your favourite thing about working in the drinks industry?

Jacob: The people! Working in hospitality you get to meet a very broad range of people from guests to coworkers. Everyone has an interesting story to tell.

FDM: If you weren’t working in the spirits industry, where would you be working?

Jacob: I would most likely be working in the finance industry as that is what I studied at university.

FDM: What will be the next big drinks trend?

Jacob: I feel like Agave spirits are definitely the next big trend and will continue to grow hugely over the next few years!

FDM: What is the most underrated drinking city and why?

Jacob: Cairns is definitely at the top of that list.  The quality of bars and hospitality up there is booming at the moment and there is such a wide variety as well. You’ve got a place that is so close to my heart that is Three Wolves (my baby), what I think is easily the best tiki bar in the country (Flamingos Tiki Bar) trust me this place is worth the trip and so much more from an amazing coffee culture to craft breweries and distilleries there is something for everyone!

FDM: You win the lottery tomorrow. What’s your first purchase and why?

Jacob: I would definitely start but buying my parents their dream house! They’ve done so much to support me over the years, and there is honestly no way I could ever repay them but I think this would be a nice start! And then after that maybe a nice trip to Tuscany, that place has a special place in my heart.

FDM: What’s your spirit animal?

Jacob: Probably a Quokka! Im rarely without a big smile on my face, I try to see the good in everyday and like to project that onto the people around me.

FDM: What’s your favourite Southtrade product?

Jacob: Very tough question but I think it’s either Mr. Black and Corazon, I don’t think I could between those two. The ethos and culture surrounding both of these companies resonates with me more than any others!

FDM: What advice do you have for someone just starting in the drinks industry?

Go to good bars, watch and listen to bartenders, you’ll learn more doing this than any book can teach you. Books and the internet are great tools, but everyone has had different experiences and you can learn different things from everyone!

FDM: Everyone has at least one horrid shift. What’s your worst bar shift, what happened?

Jacob: Yeah, of course we’ve all had some bad shifts, but as I said before I really like to focus on the good in each day and when it come down to it I genuinely love this industry and my job so even on the bad days it’s pretty hard to feel like I’ve had a really bad day!
